Getting in line to register for the Freshman ( 8/9 yr olds) Klein Texans Football team. Now, keep in mind that registration was at 9 AM Saturday morning! However, the word on the street was that to get a place on the team (only 8 spots left) you had to get there REALLY early! OK, no problem - we've all done this before for some rockin' concert tickets back in the day...it's just like that!

So, my friend's hubby and Dave got to the Jr. High to "camp out" Friday night. I kid you not, by the time they parked the car (at 11:45) and got their chairs out, another car pulled up - for the same reason! We were the FIRST in line, phew!

Every 15-30 minutes or so, more people arrived! The cops came to check on the "situation"... we got the all clear to stay put. By 2 AM, the moms arrived to relieve the dads. When we arrived at 2, there was about 40 people in line - waiting, talking, sleeping, watching movies, etc... OMG - this is for a bunch of 8 yr olds! But then again - this IS Texas Football!

So, long story short, the doors opened at 9 am. We were the first to register and got a place on THE team! By this time there was well over 150 people waiting to sign up for their teams - this was an open registration for about 20 different teams. The Texans has the most limited amount of space.

So, this is how it all began! We are now part of the awesome Klein Texans and Angels family! We lived and breathed football and cheerleading for the last 5 months!

It was a great season for both teams! I am now sad to see it end. It will be about 9 more months until we get to do it all over again!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0c055W5aPTo/TOQ5ohlApCI/AAAAAAAAAMA/8Mk-sM-W17M/s320/DSC06225.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540616809943704610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0c055W5aPTo/TOQ5mzKLh2I/AAAAAAAAAL4/9BtKSI3CKGE/s320/DSC06181.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540616780303271778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0c055W5aPTo/TOQ5mVvPT-I/AAAAAAAAALw/8Sd5E_2Y00Q/s320/DSC06231.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540616772405645282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0c055W5aPTo/TOQ5lzTHlqI/AAAAAAAAALo/_zSo8QAS_E4/s320/DSC06264_0048.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5540616763160893090" />

Gluten Free Kid gets a party invite...what to do?

Well, this has happened several times over that last few weeks.

The best thing to do is call the host and ask what is going to be served at the party.

In one instance, they were planning on having hamburgers, chips, and cake. I asked the mom not to put any seasoning on Patrick's burger and that i'd bring a bun for him to put it on. I also made cupcakes (ahead of time and froze them for this purpose) - and brought that to the party so he could also have dessert. This worked out wonderfully!

Another party was dinner and a movie. Dinner was planned for Red Robin. So, before I responded to the invite, I checked out Red Robin's Gluten Free menu. I was able to check with Patrick to see what he'd like off the menu and responded to the mom with these instructions. She was so sweet, she even ordered him a special GF dessert to have back at their house.

Basically, whenever my child is invited to a birthday party, I will always ask what is being served. If there is nothing that is suitable, i'll ask if I can bring his own food. Better to be safe than sorry later.

Not to worry, he doesn't need an Epi pen in case of emergency. But if he eats something with gluten in it, he will have an upset tummy later.

Living gluten free involves lots of planning ahead. It also means no more quick stops at Subway, McD's, Wendy's, etc... Those places are on our "forbidden" list. There are so many restaurants that are now offering GF options on their menu.

Here are some of our favorites that we have tried so far...

Pei Wei - my fav is the Asian spicy chicken salad
Olive Garden
Fuddruckers (no bun hamburgers)
BJ's Brewhouse - GF pizza is actually REALLY good!
PF Changs
My Fit Foods

I'm sure there are more, but this is what we've tried so far...

Another side note, when dining out and you're not sure what GF options are available, ask to consult with the chef. Mind you, the best time to do this, is NOT during busy lunch or dinner times.

Plan Ahead and know where you're going - do your homework. This will make your dining experience most enjoyable.

Mom of 3 - Living Gluten Free

Well... here is a new chapter in our household. Gluten Free Living!

What is that - some of you may ask...

Well... here's the basics...

Gluten is a protein found in many grains. People with Gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease, cannot process this protein. As a result, the are MANY side affects that can occur. Each person will react differently.

As WE have found out, when I have "gluten" in my diet, it causes me to gain weight - or have a VERY difficult time losing weight. I've also been recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism - which can also be a reaction to Gluten. The only "Cure" for gluten sensitivity is elimination. There are no pills or quick fixes! Remove gluten from your diet! Since doing this (90% GF), I have lost 12 pounds! I have yet to get my Thyroid levels checked, but am due soon!

Now, for others in my family, Gluten is reacting with them differently. My hubby has had a lifetime of GI issues as well as psoriasis (dry skin patches) and arthritis. For him, removing Gluten from his diet has resulted in NO GI problems, and an improvement in flare ups with the psoriasis and arthritis.

My 8 yr old son is also GF. We suspected that he also has a sensitivity to gluten as well and decided to remove gluten from his diet. In doing this, we have noticed that his face and tummy no longer look bloated. Now, keep in mind, he is a VERY fit and active boy that is not overweight, but the gluten was causing a bloated look. His attention with school work is much improved as well as his behavior.

My 2 girls do not show any signs or symptoms of this sensitivity - but we do try to keep them GF.

We have been reading some GREAT books to educate ourselves on gluten free living... here are some of the titles...

The Guide to a Gluten-Free Diet by: David Brownstein, M.D. & Sheryl Shenefelt, C.N.

Cereal Killers: Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free A-Z by: Dr. Ron Hoggan & Scott Adams

Living Gluten-Free is becoming our new lifestyle. We are learning more everyday on how to live GF.

Also, thanks to Fred Emmite (our nutritionist) for all his support and guidance in this journey...<div (Caulfield is my maiden name). It came from my cousin Michael's wife Joanne. (yes, i'll be your friend!)

My dad's brother and family live in England - Liverpool and Manchester. My cousins found me! I've been able to have IM chats with my cousin James. (we're planning an online Wii turney with his daughter and my kids) I've been able to keep posted on Micheal and his family. Now, i'm looking to connect with their sister, Jenny and other brother John. My uncle Harry is also getting a FB page soon too.

It's just AMAZING! My mom is blown away that I am able to have "conversations" (IM type) with my cousins! I think she'll get a FB page soon too!

Anyway, here's a shoutout to FB! Thanks for helping get back in touch with some family!

NFL - Bears v. Having the day off school and playing outside in the snow is such a great childhood memory.

For you southerners, the air outside during a snowstorm is actually pleasant. If it's too cold, then it wont snow. Yes, it CAN be too cold to snow!

Anyway, I do miss the snow. However, now that I have experienced Southern Winter, I think I would only want to enjoy a few days of the white stuff. Because then it gets ugly and dirty snow...

Well, for you Northerners...today it is 73 (so far). Bridget had swimming lessons at 8:30, all she wore was her swimsuit and a towel...no shoes, no snow coat, no layers and layers of clothes. Beautiful, isn't it?!

Happy Birthday Dear Maggie!

Ok, my dear girl is turing 9 today! I can hardly believe it. Bear with me once again as we delve into yet another birth story. (if you're keeping count 3 kids, 3 stories...this is the last story)

Maggie is our first born. We knew that we were having a girl. We also knew that we were going to name her Margaret Elizabeth. Margaret is after me and my 2 grandmothers (one was Mary Margaret and the other is Margaret Mary...that is where I got my name). Elizabeth was after Dave's mom - Betty. That was planned, right?

My due date was December 16th, Dave's birthday. That would have been neat. I was working full time and decided to "plan" for a week off before the baby came. SO, with my due date being the 16th, my last day of work was the 10th.

Thursday the 9th I had an OB appointment ...everything looked "fine" I was maybe 1 cm and 40%. Ok, no biggie, I thought. This is my first delivery...

It was a Friday night. I was pretty uncomfortable at this point in my pregnancy so I was sleeping in the basement on a bed, by myself. I woke up around 1:00 with some tightness, no big deal. I'll go back to sleep. About 1:45 it woke me up again. this time I went upstairs to alert Dave to keep "count" of the contractions. By 2:00 (ish) they were starting to become a little more regular and intense. I thought, OMG if this is bad now, what's real labor going to be like. Good thing I was planning on an epidural!

At some point Dave called the doctor (as we were directed to do when time these things). She said to keep timing them and take out time because it could be 12 more hours. So we, I mean he, took his time. (i was getting a little cranky now). He took the dog out, warmed up the car, and put my bags in the car.

All the while i'm now in the bathroom with these excruciating pains. Because I had to go to the bathroom before we left. (little did I wnow...that she was nearly there). While i'm working through these contractions, I manage to get out the door and into the back seat of the car, laying down.

We left the house around 3:30 am for the hospital. At this point I am just screaming constantly, the contractions never stopped. There was NO break in between. Dave told me later that the normal 22 minute drive to the hospital took close to 15 minutes.

OK, here's the really intense part...

We arrive through the ER doors, im in a wheelchair, because I can't walk anymore. They check me in at 3:50 am and begin rushing me up to the OB floor (3 floors up and on the otherside of the hospital). The OB triage RN wants to check me to see if in in true labor (seriously I wanted to wring her neck at this point). I get up from the wheelchair and my water breaks. I said I think the baby is coming out RIGHT NOW. I DO remember asking the RN for the anesthesiologist for my epidural...i'm sure deep down she was laughing, because at this point I was 10 and 100%...there was no time. Damn!

During this time, Dave is parking the car and making his way to OB. Just as I get into an unlit OB delivery room, sat on the gurney, Dave walks in and the RN next to me and Dave literally deliver the baby. They were turning lights on, taking the protective "saran" wrap type cover of the baby incubators... I was not waiting and neither was Maggie.

At 3:53 am, Margaret Elizabeth was born. It all happened sooo fast it was shocking. From that moment on, my deliveries were all just as quick. My labor was was 2 hours from 1st contration to the time she was born! Yikes!

We were so thrilled to welcome Maggie into the world. Within 2-3 hours, all the new grandparents had arrived to welcome her to the family. It was beautiful!

By the way, there was NO doctor in the delivery room to deliver Maggie, but I still had to pay the bill, hmmmm.

Well, Maggie. You are an extremely bright, caring, thoughtful, loving, smart young girl. I am very proud of you and who you are growing up to be! We love you so very much. Happy Birthday Sweet Girl.

Vocab lesson of the day:

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: />
Here we go again...another year older! Where did the past 7 years go, seriously?!
Patrick John Kappel came into our home on November 14, 2001.

Bear with my, another pregnancy story...

Since my labor with Maggie was very quick (1.5 hrs - look for her birth story in December..), Patrick was going to be the same or even faster. So, the err on the side of caution, my OB new that at the end we would be discussing induction.

My pregnancy was fairly uneventful, until about 28 weeks. I began to have pre-term labor. Dave and I were at Denny's with Maggie having breakfast. Weird that I remember that, but I couldn't eat a thing! I felt my tummy get really tense. No biggie, I thought, braxton hicks, right? Well, they kept coming and they were often enough that I called my mom and told her that we'd need her to meet us at the house to watch Maggie.

Off to the hospital we go...monitored and was checked by the DRs. Given a shot to stop labor. this worked! Yippee!!! Went home to "take it easy".

Again around 32 weeks (or so) this happened again...we were able to manage another trip to the ER and another shot. Good to Go!

Around the same time as this last visit to the hospital was 9/11. I remember being 7 months pregnant when our nation was under attack. How strange and sad. I felt sooo incredibly sad for the pregnant moms that lost their spouses.

Well, we scheduled the induction for 11/14 which was 2 weeks early from my due date. Because of my precipitous delivery (again look it up - it means fast) we wanted to be sure that I was in the hospital in a timely manner (see next month for Maggie's story).

Arriving at the hospital and getting dressed in my lovely gown, I made sure that the anesthesiologist was available immediately. I was NOT doing "natural" labor again! My doctor came in and "checked" me, started pitocin, and broke my bag to get things going.

I remember distinctively telling the doctor to "not go too far" this wasn't going to take long. Seriously about 30 minutes later I was in "full" labor and called for the doctor. It was time...about 20 minutes of pushing...along came Patrick John! It was a total surprise! We did not know what we were having!

My little man is growing up so fast! He is a very sweet, smart, creative, athletic little boy! I love you to bunches! Have a great Birthday Buddy !!!

Why I love being a swim Mom!

OK, I have become a full-fledged swim mom! I REALLY love this sport! It has so many great lessons for the kids to learn (without even knowing it). It is great excercise (not that I can do a 100 M "anything")!

Today was our first (of many) meet with Pack. We woke at the early hour of 5:00 AM. Dressed, brushed hair and teeth, made a donut/coffee run and got on the road. We departed at 6:15 and arrived at Kingwood HS by 7:15. Warm-ups began at 7:30 and the kids needed to circle-in (check-in their names for each event).

The meet began at 9 am. Today, they were swimming events that they have never done before or at these lengths.

Patrick was set to do a 100 Y Backstroke. He was quite nervous, but he did GREAT! He raced with the 8 & U group. Awards are given by age groups 6,7,8, and so on. In this particular event, he was the ONLY 6 yr old. He finished his event and soon after results are posted...Patrick gets 1st place ribbon for 6 yr old Age Group (you do the math). He was so excited to get first place...I did NOT tell him that there was no 2nd, 3rd or 4th place 6 yr old. He didn't need to know. His confidence from that point on was sky high!

Maggie's event was next, she was doing the 100 Y IM (individual medley) - her first ever. Thanks to Emily Dunbar, she gave her an easy way to remember the stroke order: Butter your Back, Breast is Free. this helped alot, she did great!!! She got 5th place for her age group! Her confidence too was way up there.

These first two events and their awards really set the tone for the day. It took away all the "first time" jitters. It made them feel really good about their race. They know that not every swim will result in a ribbon, but today that didn't matter.

The kids are learning to be accountable for their event, not only getting there on time but for their performance as well. You can't "fake" swimming well. If you don't practice, you don't do well.

The kids are learning to cheer on teammates, even if they are in the same events as competitors.

They are learning responsibility, keeping track of their "gear". Remembering to check in with their coaches before and after their meet.

The parents learn to have restraint. There is NO boisterius yelling, no trash talk, no scolding. We learn to celebrate all their events, good or bad, with positive reinforcements. This IS supposed to be FUN, right!!!

I love being a swim mom to Maggie and Patrick (Bridget soon too). I get so excited to watch them swim and I panic if I think i'm going to be late for an event---i'd be crushed if I missed an event.

Here' s to a great year swimming. You never know what the future may bring! Best of Luck to my awesome kiddos! I love you tons!!!

I did start this day with a little sadness. My little baby girl just turned 4! It is sooo hard to believe she is growing up too fast!

I still remember my pregnancy with her. Not the easiest. By 24 weeks we started pre-term labor I was dilated to 1 and 80%. Not great to happen this early on. Admitted to the hospital for 24 hours on strict bed rest to stop the contractions with shots and IVs. Dischagred, only to be back a week later...same thing! This time I was there for 2 days. We even toured the NICU and met the staff, "just-in-case". Not easy to relax knowing that we may not be able to "stop" her from coming. Released home for strict, total bedrest until delivery. WHAT??!! That's al least 12 more weeks!!!

I knew that it was the best for the baby and me; but OMG...I had a 4 and 2 yr old at home. This momma cannot be on bed rest. Not to mention that we lived 300 miles from any family!

Well, through the graces of moms, mine took FMLA from her job to help for 12 weeks. My dad would come every couple of weeks for a visit and Dave's parents would come to give my mom a break! My mom's group at church also helped with meals when we were ready and needed them. Neighbors and friends pitched in and helped carpool the kids to preschool. Dave worked the night shift and was helpful during the day.

All the while I sat on the couch! That was ALL I could do! For those that know me, this was absolute torture. To see my mom doing my housework, laundry, dinner (ok, I don't mind the dinner thing), but seriously it was VERY hard to "let go" of all the control. I had no choice.

Fortunately the bed rest did work. We did have a scheduled induction 3 weeks early. All tests and shots to "strengthen" her lungs were done. I also needed IV antibiotics prior because of Strep B+. Well, because I have very precipitous labors (look it up it means really quick) we wanted to induce to insure the full IV antibiotic dose.

I'm all hooked up, got IV started, got my epidural (thank you God for creating DR's that created such a wonderful drug), and pitocin. Well, needless to say, my delivery accelerated so quickly that we were not able to complete the full dose of IV antibiotics, that baby was coming!

Not long after getting all hooked up, our Precious Little (6 lbs, 1 oz) Baby came into this world!

Bridget Ellen Kappel born October 15, 2004...what a beautiful day! And she was a beautiful tiny baby that was very Nope.

By 2 AM, the worst had arrived. It was howling now. You almost felt dizzy from all the whirling of the wind (or margaritas - LOL). Trees were completely bent. TV coverage was amazing.

2:45 - All Black! OK, here it is! This is the worst. No TV to warn us of anything else. No street lights to help us see.

I began receiving text messages from friends in the area - at 3 AM. Were all up - NO ONE was sleeping thru this --except my kids! Thank God for that.

7 AM - daylight. The storm was still very strong and brutal. I don't even remember what time it stopped being stormy.

Sometime in the afternoon on Saturday, you began to "hear" the aftermath of IKE. This consisted of generators and chain saws. For days and days it continued.

We were VERY fortunate that a "cool" front had made its way to Houston. It certainly made it bearable. 80's and breezy during the day and mid-60's at night.

Gas was hard to come by, so were were very "frivolous" with our usage. I have to say a HUGE that you to UPS for "shipping" its managers out of town. Because of this, my neighbors evacuated. Leaving us a borrowed generator - our new life source!

Also, my next HUGE thank you goes to my cousins - Jacki & Karl. Once they had power restored, Karl was kind enough to fill up empty gas tanks and bring them half way to our house for pick-up. Many gas stations around here did not have power or gas. Thank you guys!!!

Life with out power was great! Everyone was outside playing, talking, walking, etc. Dave was home and became "Master Chef". Between cooking everything on the Weber and stove top (gas-- t.g.) he was lovin' it! I don't think we will ever eat a pizza from the oven - grilled only!

School was closed from 9/12 thru 9/24! Still not sure how many days they will HAVE to make up yet.

Well, today is 9/24 and things are "kinda" back to normal. School is in session, football games are on, swimming practice to go to, girl scouts, meetings, etc. I still have some friends a few blocks over that do not have power yet.

Now I have "Hurricane" to add to my repertoire of Natural Storms. Ike will rank up there with the worst one to live through.

<br So the Monday before the "storm" was to hit we were busy. Watching the news and The Weather Channel around the clock.

Tuesday AM comes and nothing but rain! All day rain and no winds.

The rain pretty much kept us inside all day. By evening, the kids were sooo ancy and restless. Patrick was climbing the door frame (like spiderman) and Bridget pulled him down, landing on his foot funny. I "had" to go to Church. Jesus then, certainly did not have a role in my life.

Even as an Adult, it was pretty much the same. Don't get me wrong, I have not turned against or away from the Church. I just didn't have a Relationship with the Church or Him.

For me, I thought - going to Church every Sunday, saying Grace at meals, raising my Children with "Catholic" values, I really thought that this was Times in Schaumburg, IL. Larry (my Father-In-Law) and I took the kids. If you haven't heard of it before, it's basically dinner and a show.

When you arrive to the Castle, you are assigned an area and a Knight. We were in the Black and White area and therefore cheered for that Knight (as well as his allies). Once we were seated, the "Man-Wench" (he actually called himself that) served us our Medieval meals. No Silverware! We started with "Dragon Tale Soup" (veg. soup). It was served in a crock with a handle - you drink it. Then on came the 1/2 chicken, 2 ribs, potato wedge, bread and beverage. (the food was actually quite good)

All the while you are eating, there is a "performance" going on in the arena below. There is a storyline, but all the kids were interested in was the jousting and sword fighting. Of course, in the end, the Prince prevails and they all live happily ever after.

The kids had an absolute blast! They can't wait to go again!

OMG - 24 years, really?!

So, after some fine detective work, Sharon and I (mostly Sharon) found most of our graduating class from Grade School. You may think it sounds corny to have a "Grade School Reunion" but, we were a very small school and most of us were together since 1st grade.

Well, we did it! We started the Grade School Tradition! Of all that we were able to get in touch with (all last minute, i may add) 8 were able to make it!

It was CRAZY to see girls and boys from 24 years ago! Some i'd see now and again in HS, but not much after that.

We reminisced and told stories. We caught up on each other's lives. We laughed - tons! My mom, and Father-in-law and myself took the kids downtown - on the train (Metra).

Of course, they thought the train ride was great! First place we went once we arrived at Union Station -- we walked to the Sears Tower. Granted, I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, but going to the Sears Tower wasn't always on my list of "things to do". I've only been one other time.

The elevator to the top (103 floors) took maybe 3 minutes (very fast - 16 mph- I asked). Well, the view is breath-taking! It's a must-do for all visitors to Chicago. It was a beautiful clear day and you could see sooo far!

From there we hopped on the (Free) Trolley to Millenium Park. Before walking from the Trolley stop to the Park, we stopped for lunch at a street Cafe on The Magnificant Mile(Michigan Ave). The City is sooo beautiful and rich with life (all kinds - we saw them...)

From lunch we walked across the street to the Park. It is filled with "art" structures and such. The kids loved to see it all. We then walked to t

he Art Intistute (where the next FREE trolley picks us up.) From there we took the trolley to the Museum District.

We stopped off near the Adler Planetairum and Shedd Aquarium. There is the most PERFECT spot to take a picture with the Chicago skyline in the back drop - absolutely breath-taking!!! From there we walked to a vendor and had ice cream on the lakefront. We ended the day going to the Field Museum.

At the Field Museum we saw - Sue the T-Rex and many other native animals. Then off the catch the 5:30 train back to the suburbs.

Naturally we had to end the day with a good ol Italian Beef Samwich (i know i spelt it wrong, but when your in chicago...).

THAT was Chicago! I wish I had more time to take the kids all over downtown. They are still a bit young, but someday I want to show them - EVERYTHING CHICAGO!

National Lampoon's Vacation - not really!

I think that it's ironic that Chevy Chase's movie National Lampoons Vacation was on today - and here I am! (Only we don't have an "Uncle Eddie" - thank God!)

No, nothing dramatic has happened. Just some good old fashioned family car trips. Only we have DVD players, i-pods, cd players, AC, snacks, etc...

Well, so far this leg of the journey has been GREAT!

Once we departed Texas, we drove 600 miles and 10 hours to Memphis. Stayed over night and ordered Chinese food and ate in the room (the kids thought that was sooo cool!)

Once we were rested, the next day we left for Newburgh, IN. About 350/400 miles and 5 hours later - we arrived.

It was really strange to see our old house. We were very happy to see our old friends. We arrived at the Griffins for a 2 day stop.

I think we were there for an hour when Maggie hooked up with her old friend Abby. Within moments, a sleepover was arranged and I lost my child for the evening. She had a great time - she really misses Abby - tons!

We had a great evening with the Griffins. Patrick stayed with the "big" boys - I have no idea how late they were up, but I did hear some giggling!

We had plans to go to the lake and meet some friends, but it rained. We met and went bowling with the Griffins, Marschals and Fouts' families. We had a great time!

That evening we had an "impromptu" Ladies Night Out! Can I just say - "OMG!!!" Honestly, we had sooo much fun! Just sitting and sippin' Margarita's and chattin' totally rocked! I cannot divulge all the contents that were discussed that evening (this is a family site - lol).

All I can say is that Carol and I have to "iron" our some detials of a new "beverage" that we have created. We are in the process of Trademarking our idea. Watch near your local bar for more details...

Thanks to the Griffins for opening their doors to letting us stay with y'all! We miss you alot. I can't wait for the next visit!!!

From Newburgh we drove to my parents house in Chicago. We arrived on Thursday evening.

That Saturday was the Westhcester Fun Fest (our town drink, eat, music festival) We had free unlimited rides tickets (awesome - that saved me $45). The kids had a blast!

While we were walking around I ran into about 5 different girls that I went to grade school with - weird. Anyway, after chatting, we have decided to have an "impromptu" 8th grade reunion. Weird right, 8th grade? Actually we went to a very small Catholic grade school - only 36 in our graduating class. Most of us had been in school together since 1st grade. We've been able to locate about 10 kids we graduated with and spread the word. We're meeting up this week, so I am looking forward to seeing everyone (it's been 24 yrs...wow!)

OK, again I digress (i really do this often - i think i have A.D.D.) Anyway, Sunday night Dave and I and the kids left to go to the lakehouse (NE Indiana). We were there through Thursday night and then came back to Chicago. (the lake trip is a whole separate blog entry...it was soo much fun!)

The whole reason that we were coming to Chicago in the first place was for a Wedding. Dave's dad Larry is getting married to Jane. So, once back in Chicago - on Friday we met up with Larry, Jane and some others for pizza and wine. And later on that evening we went out and met up with an old friend Lauri.

Saturday was the day of the Wedding. It was scheduled to start at 4 pm. It poured all day long and this was to be an outside - backyard-park-like setting (with tents). I was soo worried all day about the weather, what shoes to wear in the wet grass(lol), and so on. By 3 pm - the sky's cleared and the sun came out. It was amazing! The ceremony was beautiful (more on this event in another blog post)!

That evening we went downtown and met up with more friends and had a great time at InnJoy - 80's bar in Bucktown.

Sorry for the long post, but we have done sooo much since we left.

Here is my running total ( and I still have another week here and a drive home...) :

miles driven since 7/6 - 1950 miles
hours in the car driving - approx. 34 hours
gas: arm & leg and pint of blood
memories for our family: PRICELESS!

Happy Dancing!!!

I'm gonna be an Aunt! I'm gonna be an Aunt!

I got a call this morning from Megan - Dave's sister - and she announced that I will be an Auntie!

Hoorray!!!

Yes, i've been called Auntie Mary by my cousins kids - which is a great honor! But this is Dave's only sibling and it makes like "Real" Auntie and Uncle!

I am sooo excited for Meg & Josh and I wish them the best pregnancy.

My pregnancy advice:

1. eat often (small bits of stuff)

2. drink lots of water (also stay close to the restroom)

3. pamper yourself (believe me you wont have time later)

4. journal how your body changes (i wish I had prego pictures)

5. enjoy each stage of pregnancy

6. shave your legs everyday - ok, I know that sounds silly, but really do it. If you shave everyday as your belly grows, it won't get as difficult at the end.

7. call me anytime to talk!!!

8. smile - God has given you a gift!

I'm sure I can think of more advice - but I don't want to overwhelm you (yet - lol).

We love you guys!!!

p.s. on my own - for a summer driving trip.

In the past any trip we have taken in the car has been a quick drive from SW Indiana to Chicago (5-6 hrs). I say quick because it's just the right amount of time that one can be in the car and still keep their sanity. Actually we have done that drive for 4 years that it became "no big deal" to do and the kids were quite good.

Well, our geographical location has changed. Which means the duration of our drive North has also changed. Now i'm looking at 19 hours to Chicago OR 15 hours to SW Indiana (and then an additional 5-6 hours to Chicago).

The "money-saving" side of my brain is saying - "...you can drive straight through to Indiana."

Where the logical/practical side of my brain is saying "...OMG are you kidding!"

Logic Wins! It will take 2 days to drive to Indiana, with a stopover in Memphis (we might see the King - who knows).

We are going to visit our old (totally awesome) neighborhood. I could do a whole blog on that neighborhood. Honestly is was like a Utopia - very Midwesternly. For those Northerners, you will understand. Living in the South now has brought a whole new meaning to "know your neighbors". I don't mean it in a bad way, it's just "different"

OK - I digress...

So, once we stay in Utopia, I mean Indiana, we will visit for 2 days. Can't wait!!! The its off to Chicago. (again that's a 5-6 hr drive)

Dave is flying and will meet us in Chicago. From there we are going to the lakehouse for a few days (another 3-4 hr drive). Then back to Chicago again. This time we will be there for about 7-10 days.

We have Larry and Jane's Wedding on the weekend and visiting with family the rest of the week. AND we will be feasting on all the Chicago cuisine! I could do a whole blog on Chicago and the AWESOME food it has to offer. I'm not talking about fancy stuff - just hot dogs, italian beefs, pizza, pasta, did I mention pizza! Again, I digress!

Chicago has sooo much to offer(other than great food)! We'll probably take the train downtown and go to the Museums. Then a day at the Zoo. Another day swimming - if I get really adventurous, i'll take the kids to Oak Street Beach. It holds so much nostalgia for me...ah the good 'ol days!

Then when we are good and rested, it's on the road again. This leg of the journey will take 19 hours! My practical side has already told my money-saving side to "Shut up" about any ideas of driving straight through! This is definitely a 2 day drive.

We'll probably stop again in Memphis (really, i'm not a King fan - it's just half way point) or if I can really push it Little Rock. We'll see.

Total hours driving: 46+

Total miles: 2450 +

Gas: arm+leg

visiting with great friends and family: PRICELESS!

Please pray for us and our safe travels. I'm sure I will have plenty to blog about when i'm back (in about 3 weeks).

Spring Photos - enjoy...

I love taking and posting photos - enjoy these...

<img style="display:block; having my 8 week pity party. it sounds odd, but about every 8 weeks or so i start to feel "blue".

you'd think that after 5 years of living away from family, i'd adjust. NOPE!

i really miss my family. for those of you who know me, i'm an only child that "grew up" with my cousins in the same town. our moms were twins and did EVERYTHING together. so needless to say all the kids were together as well. i was the oldest and everyone after me was 2 years apart.

we would go to the zoo, pool, vacations etc., together. we'd even fight like siblings - OK usually me fighting with James or John. (it really was their fault!)

well, now that we are all married with kids (11 kids between us) - i feel like my kids are missing out on all that camaraderie i had growing up.

i also miss just showing up at my mom and dads for a visit. the kids getting to sleepover at their house, sunday dinners, or just having help nearby!

now we are 1000 miles away and gas is soooo expensive and flying is just as ridiculous it makes frequent visits impossible. the occasional once flight/year and once /drive a year is about all i can do.

yea my parents will come, but is the "extended" family that can't make it down for the same reason i can't make it up that often...

well, i think i feel much better having said all that. it helps that next week i am driving with the kids on a 3 week tour...
